The origins of Capulin Volcano, a prime example of a cinder cone volcano, are still visible in the landscape today. It is also home to a diverse cinder cone habitat and human habitation stretching back thousands of years. Rising tall in the landscape, Capulin Volcano is a sacred place for tribes indigenous to the area and has long served as a landmark for those passing through. Today, this land and these stories comprise Capulin Volcano National Monument.
Northern Light Productions produced a fifteen-minute interpretive film for the Park that weaves together the ever-changing geologic, natural, and human history of this site. Original photography—including interviews and sweeping drone footage—combines with animation to present a picture of the Volcano’s past and present. We also produced four webisodes on the topics of the night sky, sacredness of the landscape, cowboy George McJunkin, and building a monument.
