A Global Tour
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Caterpillar launched a traveling exhibition that brought its story directly to employees around the world. The experience toured facilities across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond, creating a shared moment of reflection and inspiration for Caterpillar’s global workforce.
Northern Light Productions developed the software systems powering the exhibit’s interactive media experiences. Designed to operate reliably across a constantly moving international tour, the platform supports multilingual interfaces, real-time analytics, and seamless content updates across dozens of countries and technical environments.

First 100 Years — Augmented Reality
The First 100 Years AR experience allows visitors to explore Caterpillar artifacts and machines through interactive 3D models. Using an iPad’s live camera, visitors view and manipulate virtual equipment within the exhibit environment—rotating, resizing, and examining models while activating hotspots that reveal archival media and historical context.
The application was developed in Unity and required extensive optimization of complex engineering models to ensure smooth performance on mobile devices.
Trace Your Impact
The Trace Your Impact touchscreen stations invite employees to reflect on how their work shapes the world. Visitors select the impacts they believe matter most—from infrastructure and transportation to sustainability and energy. Based on their choices, the system generates personalized digital postcards that visualize their connection to Caterpillar’s global mission. Integrated analytics track engagement across the tour, providing insights into how employees interact with the exhibit.
The Workers Who Built the Dam
Because the exhibition travels internationally, the entire system supports 17 languages. Visitors can switch languages instantly through an intuitive interface. As languages change, the software dynamically adjusts text scaling and layout to maintain consistent design across translations.
The platform is designed to operate reliably in a wide range of locations while synchronizing content updates and visitor engagement data across the global tour.
Imagining the Next Century
At the center of the exhibition, visitors pass through a glowing portal into an immersive media environment exploring Caterpillar’s technological future. Large-format displays visualize emerging innovations in automation, robotics, connected equipment, and advanced manufacturing—offering a glimpse of the engineering breakthroughs shaping the company’s next hundred years.
