The exhibit Cleveland Starts Here aims to tell the rich history of Northeast Ohio through the vast collections of Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS). Our media programs allow even more of these collections and their stories to come to light as visitors deepen their engagement by viewing films and exploring touchscreen interactives.

Three touchscreen programs allow visitors to delve into WRHS’s collections while promoting historical thinking. In Where Am I?, visitors explore the evolution of Northeast Ohio from 1775 to the present day through a progression of archival maps and hotspot locations. Visitors can even place themselves within this geography by pinning locations special to them on the map. What Do I Collect? introduces visitors to a sliver of the artifacts in WRHS’s holdings as they play museum curator and create their own shareable exhibit. Finally, visitors don their genealogist caps when prompted to decipher the family tree of Cleveland’s founder using primary sources in Who Am I?
A signature film introduces viewers to the vibrant Cleveland of today. Shot in a variety of neighborhoods, the film traces the changes and challenges of the past century through the city’s ongoing Renaissance. Residents speak of their city’s resiliency and diversity as the past continues to inform the present. This theme extends into the exhibit gallery as collections central to the heart of the city are on display. Slideshows of archival imagery integrate into the exhibits as the full chronology of Western Reserve’s past unfolds.
Additionally, we produced two films about brothers Carl and Louis Stokes, barrier-shattering political figures who worked tirelessly to improve conditions for residents of Cleveland and Ohio. The films include archival news footage and oral history interviews with local politicians and community members.
The team at Northern Light did a fantastic job listening to our needs, creating a plan, and keeping to the deadlines for our project despite changes and requests. We are pleased with their work and would recommend them for future projects that include digital, audio, or visual components.
