Northern Light Productions created the film Legacy of Courage: Black Changemakers in Massachusetts Past, Present, Future in collaboration with Justice George Lewis Ruffin Society’s "Long Road to Justice" project. The film centers around actions that African Americans past and present have taken in pursuit of greater freedom and equality.
It concentrates on three moments in time:
-
Elizabeth “Mumbett” Freeman’s freedom suit in 1781
-
Sarah Roberts’ attempts to end school desegregation in 1848
-
The Freedom Schools formed in 1963 in protest over unequal schooling in Boston

Each chapter of the film places focus on strategies and lessons learned working within and outside of the legal system as inspiration for young people and future activists. Seven interviews with scholars and activists guide the narrative with visuals provided by archival imagery, layered animations, and original photography.
