Northern Light Productions created six short films for the Engineering Design Workshop exhibit that showcase how a variety of professionals apply engineering skills to solve problems. The goal of these “Engineering Stories” videos was to make the engineering process accessible and relatable by highlighting an array of real-world applications.
This project led us to film in locations ranging from MIT robotics labs to a rock-climbing gym to an apple orchard. The engineers we interviewed were developing projects including soft robotic fish to explore coral reefs, biomechatronic prosthetics for rock climbing, image databases to combat racial bias in facial recognition software, and a kinetic sculpture that is a part of the exhibit itself. Simple hand drawn-style animations illustrate some of the more complex concepts, and beautiful origami-inspired animated titles tie the videos perfectly into the exhibit design.
