The exhibit "We Return Fighting: The African American Experience During WWI" includes several media programs that explore the complex experiences that Black soldiers faced both on and off the battlefield. Four short films collectively tell the story of the fierce debate within African American communities over whether to participate in World War One, the mobilization of soldiers from communities of color all over the world, the horrors of war, and the starkly contrasted experiences of families at home and those in service abroad. Two additional films address the aftermath of the war in African American communities, from renewed resistance to Jim Crow America to the exploding jazz scene in Paris that was fueled by soldiers and expatriates who discovered greater equality outside of the United States.
The soldiers and their era are brought to life through projections of archival footage and a touchscreen interactive that allows museum visitors to learn more about any of the hundreds of WWI-period family photographs on display in the exhibit.
